Asian officials issue update on dengue virus

Health professionals recently released the latest report on dengue fever in China and the surrounding Pacific region.

As of Oct. 31, 3,352 dengue cases were confirmed in China for the year. Most of these cases were detected in September and October of this year.

Between Oct. 1 and 31, 1,435 dengue cases were detected. A similar number was detected in the month of September. This figure, though large, is significantly smaller compared to the cases detected during the same time in 2014.

Malaysia has also experienced a large number of dengue cases this year. As of Nov. 21, there were 107,079 dengue cases confirmed in Malaysia for the year. In addition, there were 293 deaths due to the virus. These figures at 17.7 percent more than in 2014.

Between Nov. 15 and 21, health care workers confirmed 2,169 dengue cases.

The Philippines has reported that there were exactly 142,227 dengue cases that had been suspected by Oct. 31. In addition, there were 411 deaths that were connected to the dengue virus in some way. These figures were 48.6 percent more than the same period of time last year.
