The Philippines Department of Health recently reported that dengue fever cases in the Caraga Region have decreased by 48 percent.

Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 24, there have been 3,540 dengue fever cases recorded, including 25 deaths. This is a significant decrease when compared to the 6,827 dengue cases and 44 deaths from January to October in 2014.

The majority of the cases were based in Surigao del Sur, with 704. Butuan was a close second with 676 dengue cases, Agusan del Sure reported 645 cases, Agusan del Norte had 307 cases, Surigao City confirmed 341 cases, Surigao del Norte has 246 cases, Bayugan City reported 262 cases, Cabadbaran City confirmed 105 cases, and Bislig City has 110 cases. Tandag City and Dinagat Islands have the lowest number of cases, with 73 and 71.

The Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit, which is part of the Department of Health, reported that 54 percent of these cases were men and 38 percent were children 10 and under.

Health professionals with the Department of Health in Carage have stated the best way to eliminate dengue fever cases is to remove all potential breeding places that mosquitoes could use.
