The World Health Organization (WHO) recently released a document with various facts and figures that outline the agency’s response to a dengue fever outbreak that took place in Yemen in 2015.

Governorates that have been affected by the outbreak are included in an eDews network. The network is designed to specifically monitor malaria as well as dengue in those governorates.

The agency trained 380 health care workers to participate in managing cases for paramedics and physicians. They are trained to detect both dengue fever and malaria and have been working Hadramout, Aden, Abyan, Shabwa, and Al Hudaydah regions.

The WHO and its staff immediately began conducting field investigation mechonisms throughout Shabwa, Al-Hadaydah, Aden, and Abyan governorates as soon as the agency was notified of the outbreak. The goal is to determine the extent of the outbreak and the best ways to counteract the effects.

To further fight the outbreak, there have been several community awareness sessions held throughout the areas affected by the illnesses. An estimated 100,000 Information Education Communication (IEC) pieces were sent to all of the governorates involved in the outbreak.

Health care workers conducted residual fumigation campaigns with the goal of reaching 50,000 homes. Approximately 250,000 people in Yemen benefitted from this collaboration with the National Malaria Program. The homes were spread throughout Shabwa, Al-Hudayda, Aden, and Hadramout. In November 2015, the agencies planned additional campaigns for Abyan and Taiz as well.
