Staff at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), based in Tainan, Taiwan, have started to promote the awareness and prevention of dengue virus among its international students.

This promotion has been made to protect the international students as well as the national students, as Tainan has been battling its most serious dengue fever outbreak ever.

Various staff members, including Professor Mei-ling Tsai, the director of International Student Affairs Division, and Professor Yueh-Min Huang, the vice president for international affairs, visited the university’s international students on Sept. 10. Many of these students live at the Sheng-Li 6 and Kuang-Fu 3 dormitories.

“The best way to avoid dengue fever is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes that carry the disease,” Huang said.

The visitors demonstrated how the students must use repellent spray as well as repellent stickers for their clothing.

“At first it scares me, but with the staff from school taking precaution and measures to fight dengue I feel okay now,” Chinweze, a Nigerian student who is studying mechanical engineering at NCKU, said. “I had received emails from OIA earlier regarding the information about dengue fever, and in the dorm, the school prepared insect repellents that we can use before leaving the dorm.”

Health and university officials hope that these proactive measures will help arrest the spread of the outbreak.
