Researchers recently released a report confirming that laboratories have verified pertussis cases in England.

The report covers the pertussis activity up until June 30, 2015. It serves as an update to an earlier report that concluded at the end of Feb. 2015.

The number of laboratory-confirmed pertussis cases in England has decreased overall each year. In 2012, the nation was at its highest point with 9,367 cases. Between 2012 and 2013, the cases decreased by 51 percent to 4,621, and from 2013 to 2014, the cases diminished by 27 percent to 3,388 .

Each year there is a seasonal increase from the second and third quarters of the year. As expected, there was a rise in pertussis cases in May and June 2015. There were 1744 cases confirmed by laboratories in 2015 at the end of June. This figure shows a decrease compared to the same time in 2012, which stood at 2,399 cases. In 2013, there were 2,745 cases in the same time period. In contrast, it is a rise compared to the same time in 2014, which amounted to 1,412 pertussis cases.

Compared to the years before the 2012 pertussis outbreak, England continues to show higher rates of the illness.

Professionals recommend that the general public receive vaccinations to prevent contracting the disease.
