The Center for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health recently released an update about the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) situation currently taking place in Jordan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that there have been an additional four cases of MERS in Jordan. They recommended that the general public be especially aware of their safety as they travel, particularly if they are going to areas with health risks. This is even more important during September, as thousands of people will make their pilgrimage to Mecca.

"MERS cases reported by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have sharply increased recently, with the majority related to an ongoing outbreak in a healthcare facility in Riyadh,” a CHP spokesperson said. “According to latest figures from the Ministry of Health of the KSA, the number of new diagnosed MERS cases in the KSA remained at a high level in the past three weeks, with 21 (20 in Riyadh), 49 (47 in Riyadh) and 34 (33 in Riyadh) cases reported in the weeks ending Aug. 15, 22 and 29 respectively.”

The patients consist of a woman and three men between the ages of 38 and 76. The current index case is a man, 60, who died on Aug. 27, 2015.

"Travelers to the Middle East should avoid going to farms, barns or markets with camels, avoid contact with sick persons and animals, especially camels, birds or poultry and avoid unnecessary visits to healthcare facilities,” the spokesperson said. “We strongly advise travel agents organizing tours to the Middle East to abstain from arranging camel rides and activities involving direct contact with camels, which are known risk factors for acquiring MERS Coronavirus.”
