The Alabama Department of Health recently confirmed that it has received negative results from its Ebola test of a single individual.

The person had recently returned from an area affected by the Ebola outbreak. Staff with the Alabama Department of Public Health had been evaluating and monitoring the person since their return from the Ebola region.

The person had not been exposed to any Ebola patients. The health staff assessed the person to be at a low -- but not zero -- risk of the virus. The patient has since shown signs of improving. Health professionals involved in the case believe that the person has another illness, which would account for the symptoms of Ebola.

The Ebola test was conducted out of caution, and its result has come back as negative. The results from the laboratory returned on Wednesday.

The individual will continue to receive monitoring for the illness for the next 21 days. There is no investigation concerning this person as of today.

The health officials have not recommended any quarantines for this situation.

Approximately eight individuals are evaluated for Ebola every month. So far, 109 people have finished a complete 21-day period of monitoring for the illness. Four of these people are currently being monitored in Alabama.
