CDC launches influenza information feature for employers, workers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation launched a new feature on Thursday aimed at providing employers and workers with access to resources and information to prepare for the 2014-2015 flu season.

Business Pulse: Flu Prevention highlights specific challenges posed by influenza to businesses, as well as a question and answer feature between CSX Chief Medical Officer Thomas Neilson and Dan Jernigan, the deputy director of the Influenza Division in the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and a captain in the U.S. Public Health Service. The issue of Business Pulse also features an infographic that provides facts, links and online CDC resources.

The CDC encouraged employers to play a part in preventing their employees from contracting influenza, which can result in lost productivity and revenue. Between 5-20 percent of Americans catch the flu on average every year, and tens of thousands are hospitalized or die from flu-related illnesses.

Other Business Pulse features focus on travelers' health, global health security, safe healthcare and business continuity.

The CDC Foundation was established by Congress to link the CDC with private sector partners in developing health programs. The organization has contributed $400 million to support the CDC's work and launched more than 700 programs worldwide since 1995.
