GAVI Alliance partners with Indian leaders to fight child mortality

The GAVI Alliance announced on Friday that nine leaders in India agreed to support GAVI in its goal of increasing immunization access to children and decreasing the child mortality rate in India.

Member of Parliament Baijayant Jay Panda, Member of Parliament Nand Kishore Singh, Ambuja Neotia Group Chairman Harshavardhan Neotia, Community Empowerment Lab CEO Dr. Vishwajeet Kumar, Journalist Bachi Karkaria, Actor Shabana Azmi, Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, South Asia Paediatric Association President Dr. C. P. Bansal and Apollo Hospitals Group Executive Director Sangitha Reddy all joined forces with the GAVI Alliance to improve child health care throughout India.

"GAVI needs India's partnership and support to work with India to reduce child mortality," GAVI Alliance CEO Dr. Seth Berkley said. "These eminent personalities from different fields, will reinforce our efforts in the policy discourses on child health and advise the GAVI secretariat and partners on the challenges of immunization and the introduction of new vaccines in India. I am delighted to be launching this council, and I sincerely welcome and am grateful for the acceptance of its inaugural members."

Approximately seven million children in India are unimmunized, which accounts for approximately one-third of all unimmunized children in the world. India also accounts for nearly 20 percent of all child mortality globally.
