Nigerian businessman donates $1 million to polio eradication
Offor's gift will provide funding for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and is the first received toward the fundraising partnership between Rotary and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The collaboration is named End Polio Now - Make History Today, and could lead to $525 million in donations toward polio eradication over the next five years. The Gates Foundation has agreed to match two for one every dollar up to $35 million per year that Rotary commits to polio eradication through 2018.
Offor's gift will receive a match of $2 million for the charity.
Offor previously donated $250,000 to PolioPlus on World Polio Day on Oct. 24, 2012. He has donated more than $2.1 million in support of Rotary's global humanitarian and educational programs. Offor is Africa's largest contributor in Rotary's history.
Offor has donated to programs supporting maternal and child health; education and literacy; and peace and conflict resolution studies.
In October 2012, Offor gave support for students from African countries to attend the Rotary Peace Center in Thailand and take part in a three-month professional development certification in peace and conflict studies.
