New avian flu case confirmed in Hong Kong
The patient is a 67-year-old male. He has been admitted to a hospital in serious condition.
The Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the patient had avian influenza A H7N9 on Wednesday. Zhejiang has now accounted for 48 of the 136 confirmed cases; Shanghai has reported 33 cases and Jiangsu has reported 28 cases.
The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health and the National Health and Family Planning Commission continue to investigate the outbreak. Public health officials are also being advised by the WHO on how to respond.
Travelers are urged to wear protective facemasks and to seek treatment if they become ill after contact with birds, poultry or feces in areas of the country where cases of avian flu have been reported.
Preventative measures have been taken at all border control points in the country. Health information has been administered to travelers and in-flight announcements have been made.
Travelers to the country are advised not to visit wet markets where live poultry is sold and to avoid direct contract with all birds, poultry and manure.
