MedImmune Specialty Care partners with Tia Mowry on flu awareness

MedImmune Specialty Care division of AstraZeneca announced on Monday a partnership with actress Tia Mowry to help increase awareness about the importance of receiving an annual flu vaccination.

The campaign will be launched with an online video titled "I Insist!" that will be released on YouTube and follow Mowry, an actress, author, wife, mother and twin sister, around with her busy lifes to convey the importance of receiving an annual flu vaccine.

The campaign intends to encourage viewers to have a conversation with their health care provider to determine which flu vaccine is the best for them and their family; Mowry's choice was the FluMist Quadrivalent vaccine, which is administered through the nose.

"My hope is that our video will reinforce the value of flu vaccination and encourage families to speak with their doctors about the vaccine options available this flu season," Mowry said. "After a conversation with my doctor, we decided that needle-free FluMist Quadrivalent was the right choice for me and my family. So this year, we 'Insist on the Mist!'"

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend all persons six months of age and older receive an annual flu vaccine. Each flu season bring with it varied, and often stronger, strains of the influenza virus, increasing the importance of getting vaccinated to prevent an infection.

"As we've seen every season, the flu is unpredictable and its severity can vary widely from one season to the next," Amisha Malhotra, specialist in pediatric infectious diseases at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, said. "As such, the single best way to protect yourself and your family from influenza is by getting an annual flu vaccination."
