California entrepreneur helps launch anti-mosquito patch
Tayenaka is the creative lead of the Kite Patch, a product that reached a $75,000 funding goal on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo in just four and a half days. The patch uses compounds that disrupt the ability of mosquitoes to detect carbon dioxide, preventing them from hunting humans. The Kite Patch can be applied to clothing to provide protection from mosquitoes throughout a person's daily activity.
The Kite Patch could be used to prevent mosquitoes from transmitting diseases to humans such as dengue fever, West Nile virus and malaria.
Tayenaka worked with Grey Frandsen, Michelle Brown, ieCrowd and Olfactor Laboratories, Inc., to incorporate research conducted by a team at the University of California at Riverside and develop the Kite Patch.
The product was able to double its $75,000 funding goal to earn $150,000 in eight days. The campaign was voted as the number one most popular venture on Indiegogo, where it appeared on the front page and was featured as a top campaign by the editors of the site.
The Indiegogo campaign for the Kite Patch ended on Thursday with a total of $557,254 raised.
Tayenaka started his first business at the age of 15, a full-service video marketing agency that is now called Sparkhouse. He currently serves as the president of AD2OC, an Orange County advertising and marketing group for young professionals, the co-founder of Original California, a sustainable organic clothing line, the CEO of Preeka, a mobile health-food application, the creator and founder of Forge54, a weekend marketing event that spotlights future innovators, and the executive director of the OC Film Festival.
