Alwaleed Foundation donates $30 million to Gates Foundation for polio eradication

The Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation-Global announced a memorandum of collaboration on Monday with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to strengthen the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The foundation, which is chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, supported the first Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and Thursday. Prince Alwaleed and global leaders, philanthropists, health and development experts and business leaders attended the summit.

Prince Alwaleed noted the unique partnership between the Alwaleed Foundation and the Gates Foundation in the attempt to end polio. Prince Alwaleed said he would support the Gates Foundation in reaching countries where there are opposing views and challenges to vaccination.

During the summit, Gates said vaccines and immunization play a critical role in protecting and saving the lives of children. He acknowledged the importance of donors, global leaders and partners in the support of the initiative and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018, a comprehensive plan meant to lay out all necessary elements for polio eradication.

"We are thrilled that along with Prince Alwaleed, we have Michael Bloomberg, and Carlos Slim from Mexico, Carl Icahn, and major philanthropists who have joined us," Gates said.

Ending polio could save more than 20 million lives globally by 2020.
