Three people infected with Influenza A in Shanghai and Jiangsu

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health verified with the National Health and Family Planning Commission that on April 8 there were three cases of Influenza A in Shanghai and Jiangsu, China.

The CHP said the case in Shanghai involved a 64-year-old man, who passed away, and the cases in Jiangsu involved an 85-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both in critical condition. The 66 close contacts of the three patients are asymptomatic so far.

A DH spokesman said the CHP is closely monitoring the situation and will be taking advice from the World Health Organization.

"No human infection with Influenza A (H7N9) has been identified so far in Hong Kong," the spokesman said. "We would like to reassure the public that the Government will be as transparent as possible in the dissemination of information on cases of human infection with Influenza A. Whenever there is a suspected case, the CHP will release information to the public as soon as possible."

People should take the following measures to prevent Influenza A: avoid direct contact with poultry droppings, wear a mask when respiratory symptoms develop, cover nose and mouth when sneezing, thoroughly cook poultry and eggs and frequently wash hands with soap.
