Intestinal bacteria key to classifying various diseases

Researchers recently led two studies to show that various diseases can be quantified and classified by their effects on the intestine’s bacteria.

It is widely acknowledged that intestinal disorders like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease as well as autoimmune diseases, obesity and cancer are impacted by gut bacteria changes. Health professionals now also acknowledge that gut bacteria can change in healthy people according to diet, age, geographic location or antibiotic treatments. These changes helped the team of researchers to classify and identify various diseases based entirely on gut bacteria.

Many consider microbiota, also known as human intestinal flora, to be an additional organ in the human body. Microbiota is comprised of millions of bacteria that interact with one another and with the entire body, influencing a person’s overall health and functioning.

The diseases involved in the study included infectious diarrhea, lupus and obesity. They divided these diseases according to the chemical species composition that they found in the subjects’ gastrointestinal tract.

"Defining such changes is important because these may have an effect not only on the progression of the disease but also on our health," University of Valencia professor of genetics Andrés Moya said.

The research teams, including scientists from the University of Valencia and the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community, published their work in ISME Journal and Scientific Reports.
