Oklahoma, South Carolina top latest Walgreens Flu Index

The Walgreens Flu Index, a weekly report that provides state- and market-specific information regarding flu activity, reports Oklahoma City was the top market for flu activity for the week ending Monday.

Oklahoma City was followed by El Paso, Texas/Las Cruces, New Mexico; Northwest Arkansas and Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Little Rock/Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Oklahoma was also the top state for flu activity, followed by Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama. South Carolina was the top state in flu activity gains for the week, followed by Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Indiana.

For the week ending Monday, the Columbia, South Carolina, market had the highest flu activity gain, followed by Birmingham, Alabama; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Orlando/Daytona Beach/Melbourne, Florida.

The report is compiled using weekly retail prescription data for antiviral medications used to treat influenza across all Walgreens locations nationwide, but does not include markets in which Walgreens has fewer than 20 retail locations. It is not intended to show levels or severity of flu activity, but rather to illustrate the populations that are experiencing the highest incidence of the flu. The index also projects to increase consumer awareness and prevention within communities, while also being used as a resource for health departments, media and others.
