Walgreens recently released the latest data gathered from its weekly Walgreens Flu Index™ for the week beginning Febr. 2, 2015.

The weekly report serves the public with providing information about the flu activity levels in specific regions. The index ranks the areas with the highest numbers of flu cases throughout the United States.

The state with the highest amount of flu activity is Oklahoma. It is closely followed by Arkansas, Texas, Nebraska, Mississippi, Kansas, Louisiana, New Jersey, Tennessee and New Mexico.

The 10 cities with the highest number of flu cases includes Oklahoma City, Okla.; El Paso, Texas; Tulsa, Okla.; San Antonio, Texas; Little Rock, Ark.; Fort Smith, Ark.; Austin, Texas; Jackson, Miss.; Harlingen, Texas, and Knoxville, Tenn.

The goal of the hyper-local data is to encourage public awareness. Analysts hope that the information encourages communities in their prevention methods. Health professionals, the media, and other branches of public service at local and national levels also find the Flu Index helpful.

Walgreens gathers the data by analyzing the numbers of retail antiviral medication prescriptions for local areas. Walgreens then breaks down the figures to state and geographic market levels. The data counts do not include regions where Walgreens has 20 or fewer stores.
