England a step closer to meningitis vaccine access

The Meningitis Research Foundation sent out its own version of Christmas cheer recently in the form of some positive news: A mandate is in place to implement a MenB vaccine in England once price negotiations conclude.

For the public, it means the delivery of the vaccine will not be delayed once the final price has been agreed on by the Department of Health.

The foundation negotiated to ensure this MenB vaccine item would be included in NHS contract arrangements back in January as part of an open letter to the Secretary of State for Health. That particular letter has now been signed by more than 330 leading clinicians and scientists.

Confirmation of the policy appears in the recently published NHS Public Health Functions Agreement, also known as Section 7a. Once a price agreement is reached, the necessary paperwork for financial and workload commitments is essentially now in place, and vaccinations can begin.

It’s not a Christmas card with photos of the children, but for the Meningitis Research Foundation, this mandate getting pushed through is perfect timing in the spirit of giving.
