Asian Development Bank explains benefits of treating malaria via RMTF

Asian Development Bank explains benefits of treating malaria via RMTF.
The Asian Development Bank has detailed the positive effects of treating malaria through Regional Malaria and Other Communicable Disease Threats Trust Fund (RMTF).

Initiatives of the fund include disease and vaccination education, vaccination drives, and education on disease detection and prevention. This multifaceted approach reflects the continual search for ways to eradicate malaria from Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar, where rates of infection continue to climb annually.

An obstacle to malaria eradication in these regions is the dynamic nature of malaria. As new treatments are used, the malaria strains, also called vectors, change in cellular structure, severity and type. A factor of this continual change is the environment in which infected mosquitoes carry and transmit the disease. Climate influences mosquito populations, and conditions favorable to the carrier mosquito facilitates increased presence of the disease. Climate awareness and education, including diligent mosquito population control, therefore becomes critically important — and a matter of public health.

An overarching goal of the RMTF is environmental education regarding control of mosquito populations and ways citizens can help clear mosquitoes from public common areas and around their homes. This measure, in turn, helps lower incidence of infected mosquitoes and malaria.

In addition to environmental initiatives, malaria education and malaria vaccine education and inoculation drives, RMTF is also developing and deploying technologies to enable those living in remote areas ways to communicate with health care and field medical workers. In this way, those affected by malaria are able to report symptoms, and vulnerable populations can be helped and help stem infection. This work — a developing and continuing effort — will grow in size and need and, in time, make inroads against malaria.
