WHO issues update on efforts to eradicate polio

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on vaccinations recently published a report about the progress in eliminating polio and plans for upcoming efforts.

The report states there has been a worldwide coordinated withdrawal of the oral polio vaccines (OPV) that have Type 2 elements. This “tOPV to bOPV switch”  will be finalized in April 2016.

The executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO) has released an update titled "The Polio Endgame Plan," about the status of eliminating polio worldwide. WHO also published updates on Resolution WHA68.3, which the World Health Assembly accepted in May.

The only two countries that are still polio endemic are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Exciting progress was made when Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic nations.

The last polio case in Afghanistan officially caused paralysis as of Nov. 3. Just 17 cases were detected for 2015. In Pakistan, there were just 49 cases for this year, down from 282 in 2014.
