Pakistan continues quest for polio elimination

The Prime Minister of Pakistan’s Focus Group for Polio Eradication recently encouraged all of its stakeholders to step up their support as health professionals take the last few steps needed to eliminate the virus from the world public health scene.

The group hosted its first focus group meeting to give the stakeholders a call to action and to implement plans for six campaigns that are scheduled through May 2016.

Saira Afzal Tararr, who serves as the minister of state for National Health Services, emphasized there must be proper accountability and security among the group so that it can concentrate on facing the challenges involved in polio eradication.

The main goal of the focus group is to reach every child with vaccinations and treatments. Health professionals say that it is possible to eliminate polio within this generation.

The focus group includes the health secretary, the provincial chief secretaries, the director general of the National Crisis Management Cell and the coordinator of the National Emergency Operation Centre.
