According to the Viet Name News, the total amount of dengue fever cases based in HCM City has seen a sharp increase during the last few weeks.

Over 10,600 dengue fever cases have been confirmed for 2015, amounting to an 80 percent increase compared to the same time in 2014. There have been 400 cases confirmed each week on average within the city. Seven people (five adults and two children) have died from the fever. According to Nguyen Tri Dung, the director of HCM’s Preventive Medicine Centre, this increase is expected to continue during Oct. 2015.

The areas most affected by the dengue increase are districts 8, Thu Duc, Binh Tan, Tan Binh, Binh Chanh and Tan Phu.

Experts attribute the increase to environmental pollution, urbanization and population growth. This has served to raise the overall density of mosquitoes as well as mosquito larvae, according to Dung.

The head of the Ministry of Health’s Department of Preventive Medicine, Tran Dac Phu, requested the Department of Health of HCM and hospitals to guarantee that there is a steady supply of medicine and equipment to deal with the increase in cases. In addition, Phu has requested that there be increase public awareness as well as heightened insecticide spraying throughout the regions most affected by the illness.
