Singapore General Hospital and 60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals (60P), a company specializing in developing therapeutics specifically for tropical diseases, recently announced that it will soon launch a Phase II clinical trial for patients who have dengue fever.

The announcement was made after the hospital accepted a grant to support the research; the grant was from the National Medical Research Council based in Singapore.

Dengue fever is a debilitating, painful and potentially deadly viral disease that is spread through the bites of mosquitoes infected with the virus. Approximately 400 million people from around the world are infected with the virus each year. This results in 500,000 hospitalizations and $12 billion in annual burdens. Dengue fever’s symptoms are similar to the flu, but they develop into a lethal illness that has increased 30 fold throughout the last few decades.

Researchers previously thought dengue was only a tropical disease. Now they see that the illness is spreading throughout the southern U.S., Portugal, France and other countries in Europe.

Additionally, scientists have found a kind of mosquito that carries dengue fever into colder climates, where the mosquito survives and spreads the virus. This factor may cause the rates of dengue fever cases to increase significantly throughout the U.S. as well as Europe.
