Dr. Neal Raisman, an ambassador from the Global Healthy Living Foundation, along with other vaccine advocates throughout the U.S., encouraged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) panel to recommend Meningitis B vaccines.

The Meningitis B vaccines in question were recently developed. The vaccine advocates want the vaccine to be easily available in populations that are at-risk for the illness. This population includes people between the ages of 10 and 25.

The final version of the standard vaccination schedule is the responsibility of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). All recommendations from the committee will be implemented across the U.S. and will require that health professionals add the committee’s specific vaccines to the immunization schedule. Many insurers must also provide coverage for the vaccines.

Many families that have lost their children to meningitis want the vaccines required for students in college, as they are more at risk to contract the disease.

"ACIP's endorsement vote for the FDA recommendation for the meningitis vaccines is the right thing to do to prevent another family from losing a loved one," Raisman, who lost his own son to meningitis 10 years ago, said. “This disease can be prevented by making sure as many people are vaccinated as possible -- we have the power to do that -- so why wouldn't we?"
