A recent announcement from Post Holdings, Inc., a holding company of consumer packaged goods, revealed information about how the recent outbreak of avian influenza has impacted the company’s egg business.

A third chicken flock owned by Post received positive tests for avian influenza in Nebraska. This most recent case makes the total affected supply of Post’s volume commitments to 35 percent.

Post company leaders have decided that the ongoing outbreak of avian influenza makes a major force against the company’s egg business, called Michael Foods. Due to the outbreak, Michael Foods will no longer be able to operate efficiently and fully according to the agreements it made for supplying its customers.

Staff at Michael Foods have chosen to take proactive steps to partially mitigate the financial impact of the avian influenza outbreak. The company has discontinued specific product lines and also taken action for appropriate pricing.

Post, which is based in St. Louis, Missouri, provides private label, active nutrition, and refrigerated food categories. It is a top supplier of ready-to-eat cereals, such as Honey Bunches of Oats, Great Grains, Honeycomb and many other brands. The company also makes private label granola, nut butters like peanut butter, baking nuts, dried fruits and snacking nuts.
