Medicago, a leading Canadian biotechnology company and an international developer and manufacturer of plant-based therapeutics and vaccines, recently announced that it will build a new production facility worth $245 million (USD) in Quebec City, Canada.

The new facility will manufacture vaccines and therapeutics with novel plant technology. This project will add more than $461 million both directly and indirectly to the economy over the next five years. The facility will make 200 new high-skilled jobs by the year 2019, in addition to the current 180 employees that already work in the Quebec City office and laboratories of Medicago.

Leaders at Medicago selected Quebec City due to its qualified employees. This location gives the company easy access to a world-class research infrastructure, a dynamic business culture, an experienced workforce and support from the provincial, federal and municipal governments.

"We're pleased that Medicago will take this next major step in Quebec City, where we have already developed our innovative technology," Andy Sheldon, Medicago's CEO, said. "We will export most of our vaccines to foreign markets, but we also believe our new production complex will help Canada meet its needs for seasonal and pandemic flu vaccines, in addition to strengthening the country's response to emerging diseases around the world."
