WHO seeking input on TB plan for Europe
Officials are requesting that suggestions from the general public concerning the new TB Action Plan be submitted by May 10, 2015, at noon, Copenhagen time.
To create the new action plan, an advisory committee has been established. Its members include representatives from seven of the member states, civil society organizations, funding agencies, technical organizations and a multidrug-resistant TB survivor.
The new TB Action Plan aligns its objectives and targets with the End TB Strategy. It is established on Health2020 Strategy core principles. In September 2015, the WHO Regional Committee for Europe will grant final endorsement of the plan.
In September 2011, WHO officials met to approve the Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis within the WHO European Region, 2011-2015. The WHO Regional Committee for Europe meeting took place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Since the plan was approved, Europe has made significant progress in preventing and treating multidrug-resistant as well as extensively drug-resistant TB throughout the European region. Unfortunately there are still challenges and obstacles before Europe can attain its goal.
In May 2014, the World Health Assembly discussed the global End TB Strategy. Health professionals want to rethink and regroup about how the WHO, its partners, and European member states can continue to strive towards the goal of ending TB. The new draft will be part of this progression
