CDC Foundation releases feature highlighting negative impacts of influenza on economy

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation launched its fifth quarterly business feature on Thursday aimed at informing businesses about the negative impacts of influenza on employees and the economy.


Business Pulse: Flu Prevention features an infographic that provides facts, links and online CDC resources, as well as information on how businesses can promote flu vaccination and prevent flu in their workers.


"Flu is unpredictable but make no mistake-anyone can get sick from the flu, including employees who are otherwise healthy," CDC Director Tom Frieden said. "Influenza also negatively impacts business continuity. Businesses that want to stay productive throughout flu season should encourage and support vaccination of their employees-vaccination is the single most effective way to protect against flu."


Approximately 45 percent of the U.S. population received a flu vaccine during the 2012-2013 flu season, which prevented approximately 6.6 million flu-related illnesses. The flu costs the U.S. more than $87 billion annually, according to the CDC.


Other Business Pulse features released by the CDC Foundation focused on travelers' health, global health security, safe healthcare and business continuity.


The CDC Foundation was established by Congress to link the CDC with private-sector partners in developing health programs. The organization has contributed $400 million to support the CDC's work and launched more than 700 programs worldwide since 1995.
