WHO Regional Committee for Europe to nominate new director

The World Health Organization said on Thursday that the WHO Regional Committee for Europe will nominate its next regional director and consider progress made in implementing a policy framework during its upcoming annual meeting.

The Committee is also expected to endorse action plans for Europe devised over the course of the past year on issues including nutrition and vaccination.

The progress report on the WHO European policy framework known as Health 2020 will be the first since its adoption in 2012. WHO Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab will describe advances made in implementing the policy, which was created to improve health among Europe's population by reducing health inequalities.

The Regional Committee for Europe will also nominate its next regional director for a five-year term in a private session on Sept. 16. Jakab is the only candidate proposed for the post.

Other topics on the meeting agenda include partnerships for health in Europe, WHO reform and its implications for the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the future of the European environment and health process. Progress reports on HIV/AIDS, antimicrobrial resistance, prevention of injuries and the reduction of harmful use of alcohol will also be given.

The WHO Regional Committee for Europe meeting will begin on Sept. 15.
