GAVI Alliance reappoints Dagfinn Høybråten as chairman of the board

Dagfinn Høybråten was reappointed as the chair of the GAVI Alliance Board on Thursday.

Høybråten will act as chair through the end of 2015 and will work with the Alliance to replenish and secure funding for 2016-2020.

The Alliance is working to raise funds for the immunization of more than 300 million children. Høybråten was chosen for his experience and success in securing full funding from 2011-2015.

"I am honored to be leading the GAVI Alliance through a crucial but exciting period," Høybråten said. "Together we have the opportunity over the next 12 months to lay the foundations to help us deliver on our target of reaching an additional 300 million children in developing countries with vaccines."

Normally, the chair of the GAVI Alliance Board holds the title for only two years, but Høybråten's tenure resulted in an unprecedented increase in the number of vaccine programs in developing countries.

The Norwegian also worked toward fighting cervical cancer by introducing the human papillomavirus vaccine into Alliance supported countries.

"Dagfinn's leadership and experience will be crucial over the next year as we seek new funding to help us expand immunization programs," Geeta Rao Gupta, the vice chair of the GAVI Alliance Board and Chair of the Governance Committee, said. "We are grateful for the personal and political commitment he brings to the cause of immunization. His influence will be vital in this critical period."

Høybråten is also the secretary general of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
