Measles confirmed in Edmonton zone residents

Two new cases of measles were confirmed by Alberta Health Services on Tuesday in Edmonton Zone residents.

The AHS released a list of potential exposure locations and times. Locations include the West Edmonton Mall on May 16 from 1-7 p.m., Prairie Mall on May 17 from 3-8 p.m., Synergy Wellness Center on May 20 from 1:30-4:45 p.m. and Grande Prairie Army and Navy Club on May 20 from 8-11:30 p.m.

The specific addresses of the locations are listed on the AHS website. Those who may have been in the listed areas during the specific time frames may be at risk for measles and are advised to monitor themselves for symptoms.

Symptoms include a fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts. The rash begins behind the ears and on the face and spreads down the body to the arms and legs.

Measles is extremely contagious and there is no treatment, however, it can be prevented through immunization.

Measles vaccines are offered free of charge in Alberta.
