Hong Kong CHP takes precautions against avian influenza

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health (DH) said on Thursday that it is taking steps to prevent the spread of avian influenza A(H7N9) to the city.

A 23-year old man in the nearby province of Jiangxi was confirmed to be infected with H7N9 influenza. More than 400 cases of the disease have been reported so far this year in China, including 41 in Shanghai.

The Department of Health in Hong Kong is taking precautionary steps at the city's ports and airports.

"All boundary control points have implemented disease prevention and control measures," a DH spokesman said. "Thermal imaging systems are in place for body temperature checks of inbound travelers. Random temperature checks by handheld devices have also been arranged. Suspected cases will be immediately referred to public hospitals for follow-up investigation.

The DH also issued preventative recommendations for Hong Kong residents, including regular washing of hands, especially if contact has been made with live poultry. It also recommended that all poultry and eggs be thoroughly cooked before eating.
