U.N. Secretary-General Ban praises GAVI Alliance at international meeting

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday that the GAVI Alliance is a successful example of a global partnership.

"We have many successful examples of truly global partnerships that are delivering specific results, from (the) GAVI Alliance and (the) Every Woman Every Child initiative in the health sector, to the Sustainable Energy for All initiative," Ban said.

Ban said the world has transitioned from old donor-recipient relations, and is now experiencing more cooperation between developing countries to provide new knowledge and perspective.

The statement was given at the first High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation (GPEDC) with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Secretary-General Angel Gurriawith.

The GPEDC was launched in 2011 in South Korea. The partnership is lead by representatives from Indonesia, Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and works to end poverty across the globe.

Participants from 130 countries met to discuss development progress and framework for 2015. The group put emphasis on partnerships between emerging nations with donor and investors to ensure funds are allocated to achieve the greatest impact.

GAVI Alliance's role in global immunization and health programs is guided by international standards of effective development cooperation. It offers support in improving health planning, strengthens existing national programs and contributes to results through sustainable and efficient health plan integration.
