Global Fund nominates Dr. Deborah Birx as U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator
Dr. Birx has served as the Director of the Division of Global HIV/AIDS for the Center for Disease Control since 2005. Once the nomination is official, she will succeed U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby, who has served since 2009.
Dr. Birx is an expert in public health and began her career as a pediatric and adult clinician in immunology. Birx has dedicated her life to the fight against HIV/AIDS, with almost 20 years of experience fighting the diseases in Asia and Africa.
"Dr. Birx is a true leader in global health, and her rich experience makes her an exceptionally good choice," Chair of the Board of the Global Fund Dr. Nafsiah Mboi said. "We are very excited to work together with her in our common mission to defeat AIDS, TB and malaria."
Once appointed, her responsibilities will include heading U.S. President Barack Obama's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and managing relations between the Global Fund and the U.S.
"Debbi is absolutely outstanding," Executive Director of the Global Fund Mark Dybul said. "She is one of the best scientist-policy makers around, and she is also a great pleasure to work with. We look forward to doing great things together."
