CDC reports most severe flu seasion in four years
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported widespread flu in more than 10 states, and levels are higher at this point in the flu season than they have been in the past four years.
Infectious Disease Specialist at Vanderbilt University William Schaffner said swine flu is causing more than 95 percent of flu cases, ABC News reports.
"Philadelphia has been reporting a substantial amount and it's gaining steam and moving across the country," Schaffner said, according to ABC News. "This strain has a predilection for young adults. Any number have been admitted with very serious illness to intensive care units."
Studies have showed the effectiveness of the flu vaccine has decreased over the years, and that receiving a vaccine might not be enough protection.
"These results suggest a low preventive effect of the 2011/12 seasonal influenza vaccine, and a decline in VE (vaccine effectiveness) with time since vaccination," a study published on Jan. 31 in medical journal Eurosurveillance said.
polyDNA, a biotechnology company that makes dietary supplements, said its compound called Gene-Eden-VIR is a natural remedy that has been shown to cause a decrease in symptoms.
"We observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms," Gene-Eden-VIR researchers said in a study published in the medical journal Pharmacology and Pharmacy.
