The Centre for Health Protection of the Hong Kong Department of Health confirmed on Sunday that it was notified of a human case of avian influenza A in Dongguan, Guangdong Province.
The patient is a 39-year-old man who is in critical condition and receiving treatment in a local hospital.
Close contacts of the patient are under medical surveillance, and the health authority of Guangdong Province reports that no abnormalities have been found among the contacts.
A total of 141 human cases of avian influenza A have been confirmed in Mainland China, including 51 cases in Zhejiang, 33 cases in Shanghai, 28 cases in Jiangsu, six cases in Jiangxi, five cases in Fujian, four cases in Anhui, four cases in Henan, two cases in Shandong, two cases in Hunan, two cases in Beijing, three cases in Guangdong and one case in Hebei.
A spokesperson from the Department of Health said the CHP is in contact with Mainland health authorities for case details and the World Health Organization.
The spokesman recommended that travelers avoid markets with live poultry in affected areas, and to particularly avoid touching poultry and birds. If a person makes contact with poultry, they should wash their hands with soap and water.
