Gates Foundation and Norway join forces to support GAVI

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Norway announced on Tuesday that the organizations would collaborate to support the GAVI Alliance reach more children worldwide with its immunization programs.

"The GAVI Alliance has already helped to save millions of lives," the Office of the Norwegian Prime Minister said. "The new Norwegian Government is therefore committed to doubling its contribution to GAVI between 2011 and 2015."

Premier Erna Solberg and BMGF co-chair Bill Gates met last Friday in Oslo to discuss collaborative efforts. Combined, the organizations' efforts will help the GAVI Alliance reach an additional 440 million children worldwide with immunizations against the most prevalent vaccine-preventable diseases; approximately six million deaths will be prevented by the joint contribution.

"Our meeting today has enabled us to explore possible future avenues of cooperation, in order to identify opportunities that can enable us to take further steps towards a better future for all," Solberg said.

The BMGF is a founding partner of the GAVI Alliance and has contributed $2.5 billion to the organization to date. The Norwegian Government donates to the GAVI Alliance through three campaigns and is one of only two countries to do so.
