Motsoaledi elected Chair of Stop TB Partnership Coordinating Board

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria congratulated Minister of Health of South Africa Dr. Aaron Montsoaledi on his election as Chair of the Stop TB Partnership Coordinating Board.

"We congratulate Minister Motsoaledi for taking on this extremely important leadership role," Chair of the Board of the Global Fund Dr. Nafsiah Mboi said. "We look forward to continuing the close and productive partnership of our two organizations toward the elimination of TB among the world's people."

The Stop TB Partnership works beside the Global Fund to reach the goal of eradicating TB. Motsaledi was officially made Chair on July 12, following the 23rd Coordinating Board Meeting in Ottawa, Canada.

"As South Africa's Minister of Health, I am fully committed to achieving our vision of zero TB deaths and zero new TB infections," Motsoaledi said. "But I am also convinced that the only way to stop TB, both nationally and internationally, is through partnership."

Motsoaledi has played a key role in increasing support of TB eradication. In 2011, he highlighted the link between TB and mining to the Southern African Development Community, which ultimately led to the SADC Heads of State Declaration on TB in the mining sector.

Motsoaledi said the way to bring TB to an end is to continue to form important partnerships with organizations that have the means to bring effective medications to the areas the need them most.
