Larry Meserve named USAID mission director to Sudan

Larry Meserve was sworn in as USAID mission director to Sudan on Friday after serving the USAID organization for 30 years.

Meserve will be responsible for managing humanitarian and development programs in the Sudan. These projects include such assistance as food, emergency health care, water, sanitation and hygiene resources, as well as programs that encourage community reconciliation and conflict management.

Meserve will be responsible for helping the Sudanese develop leadership skills and assist social organizations that promote peace, good governance and democracy. USAID is the largest provider of humanitarian aid to Sudan and has been for many years.

Meserve began his USAID carrer in 1983 as a project development offficer in the Sahel West Africa Projects Office. Merserve later worked as a food peace officer in Washington, Ghana in both the East and West African Regional Offices. During this time, Meserve led a Sudan Field Office and a Regional Food for Peace Office between 1995 and 2000.

Between 2000 and 2004, Meserve served the USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives, heading programs in Asia and launched programs in Afghanistan, Angola, Liberia and South Sudan. Meserve has also served as the director of the Democracy and Governance/Conflict Office in Indonesia and the deputy regional director and regional director of USAID's Somalia programs.
