Obama administration re-establishes public health advisory group
The Advisory Group on Prevention, Health, Promotion and Integrative Public Health received reauthorization through Executive Order 13631, dated December 7. The group was originally established on June 10, 2010, through Executive Order 13544, to comply with a mandate under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The non-discretionary federal advisory committee provides advice and recommendations to the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council. The group develops policy and program recommendations for lifestyle-based chronic disease management and prevention, health promotion, and integrative health care practices.
The group was originally authorized for two years of operation until June 10. Executive Order 13591, issued on November 23, 2011, extended the authorization through September 30, 2012. The group was terminated on September 30, 2012, when no action was taken to continue the group.
The advisory group consists of no more than 25 non-federal members appointed by the president. The members include licensed health professionals, including integrative health practitioners with diverse expertise. The group reports to the Office of the Surgeon General.
The HHS provides administrative support and funding for the group to the extent permitted by law and existing appropriations.
Executive Order 13631 authorizes the advisory group through September 30, 2013.
