Authorities in Vietnam are increasing their efforts to fight bird flu after four fatalities were reported in January.
Authorities are preparing to fend off the disease in the face of Lunar New Year, when an annual dramatic increase in transportation and the sale of poultry takes place, PhnomPenhPost.com
In an effort to stem the rise in bird flu, disinfectants are being sprayed in areas where poultry is kept. In addition, residents are being educated about how to stop from contracting the virus, Kampong Chhnang province's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Department Director Ngan Nany said.
"Officials will inspect poultry transported from outside the province or district and spray them to kill the virus before allowing them inside, where they will have to keep them separate from the poultry already there," Nany said, PhnomPenhPost.com
Any cases of bird flu must immediately be reported to the local government and health offices, villagers have been informed, while the Ministry of Health is reminding officials to perform preventative work every year prior to Lunar New Year.
Banteay Meanchey Provincial Deputy Governor Chhum Vannarit said that his province has already mobilized in its villages to spray disinfectant, hang informational banners and ask villagers to report suspected cases.
