Gates Foundation names Emini director of HIV for Global Health

Emilio Emini was named the new director of HIV for the Global Health program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on Monday.

Emini is the senior adviser to the HIV team at the Gates Foundation, and also is the chief scientific officer and senior vice president of vaccine research at Pfizer, Inc.

“Emilio brings deep experience in HIV and managing complex teams of technical and delivery experts,” Trevor Mundel, president of Global Health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said. “We have benefited greatly from his role as senior adviser to the HIV team over the past year, and he is an exceptional choice to lead the team going forward.”

Previously, Emini was the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative’s senior vice president and head of vaccine development. He also served as the founding executive director at Merck’s Department of Antiviral Research as well as the vice president of Merck’s Vaccine and Biologics Research.

Emini graduated from Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in 1980, where he earned his doctoral degree specializing in genetics, microbiology and biochemistry.

Emini will begin his new duties on July 6.
