Dr. Gary Michelson, a renowned orthopedic spinal surgeon and inventor, will receive this year's Albert B. Sabin Humanitarian Award from the Sabin Vaccine Institute in Houston, Texas.

The award recognizes Michelson’s commitment to studying how to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

"We are pleased to honor Dr. Gary Michelson whose advocacy, research and tremendous generosity has enabled millions of people to live healthier, more productive lives," Dr. Peter Hotez, president of Sabin, said. "An innovator and entrepreneur, Dr. Michelson's impact on the field of science and technology is undeniable. We also greatly admire his leadership in the advancement of science through philanthropy — a quality that distinguishes him among scientists. This commitment is evident in his work with various foundations and significant investments in cutting-edge medical research."

Michelson is the inventor of surgical instruments, commonly called Michelson devices, that have made spinal surgery safer, less expensive and more efficient. Now retired from practicing medicine, Michelson is focused on philanthropic efforts, including the Michelson Medical Research Foundation, which has made major investments toward the global awareness and eradication of NTDs.

"If out of sight is out of mind, then I can think of no area of medicine where so very many people are being adversely impacted that is more in need of being brought to the consciousness of the rest of the world," Michelson said in reference to NTDs.
