Bogota meeting discusses dengue prevention

Dengue fever specialists meeting in Bogota discussed how to prevent the spread of the disease in the Americas, the Dengue Fever Initiative said Tuesday.

Conference participants discusses the status, considerations and challenges of dengue vaccines in various regions. Attendees included pharmaceutical companies, representatives from ministries of health, dengue specialists, public health experts and representatives from both the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Dengue is currently the most common viral disease contracted through mosquito bites in Latin America.

“As a center for research and public health surveillance, being part of this meeting is crucial to learn about dengue vaccine developments in order to count with scientific and technical information that help inform and support decision-makers focusing on vaccine access and vaccines’ impact in the prevention and control of dengue,” Colombia National Institute of Health Public Health Network Director Mauricio Beltran said.

The discussion was part of the Americas Dengue Prevention Board meeting that lasted for two days. The event was organized by the Dengue Vaccine Initiative.

“I’m sure that the recommendations resulting from this meeting will have a great impact in the consideration of dengue prevention tools,” DVI Senior Adviser Annelies Wilder-Smith said.
