As part of an international tender that lasts two years, Sanofi Pasteur, a vaccine branch of Sanofi, recently announced that its partner Shantha Biotechnics has been awarded the opportunity to provide 37 million Shan5™ doses to worldwide health organizations.

The award will last through 2016 and begin with the delivery of 400,000 doses of the pediatric pentavalent vaccine Shan5™ to children living in Gwalior and Jabalpur, India. The shipment will be part of the regular immunization program for children living within the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh that will make it possible for up to 10 million children to have vaccine protection against five different pediatric illnesses.

“This supply illustrates how Shantha and Sanofi Pasteur meet public health needs,” Sanofi Pasteur President and CEO Olivier Charmeil said. “We are proud to contribute to making high-quality vaccines accessible to more children in developing countries.”

The number of vaccine deliveries will depend on purchase orders for the specific treatment. Participating countries will inform the company how many doses it needs.

“We are pleased to have obtained this first tender award since Shan5™ was registered and WHO prequalified in April 2014,” Shantha CEO Harish Iyer said. “As one of the strategic manufacturing platforms for Sanofi Pasteur, Shantha is delivering on its commitment to serve Indian health needs and provide access in underserved vaccine markets.”
