The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and is now seeking epidemiologists to join its deployed Guinea response team in the fight against Ebola.

Interested epidemiologists should expect to join the Guinea response team for six weeks, with the term ending in June.

Eligible applicants must be experienced epidemiologists who are available to travel to Guinea with short notice. They must also speak fluent French. These experts will become short-term consultants who will formally collaborate and work for the World Health Organization (WHO). Responsibilities include planning and implementing activities, supervising less-experienced epidemiologists, and coordinating between WHO’s staff, national authorities and local and international partners fighting Ebola.

In collaboration with WHO, team members offer leadership and technical support on the Ebola front. They coordinate case detection, collect and analyze descriptive epidemiology, trace and monitor contacting, enforce quality standards, and train local staff.

In recent weeks, the number of Ebola cases occurring in West Africa has decreased, but affected countries need professionals to assist with maintaining the population’s health. Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia developed 22,523 Ebola cases in the past 12 months, with 8,994 of the cases ending in death.

Experts estimate that the Ebola outbreak has peaked in the three countries, but small outbreaks continue to occur in areas, demonstrating that a fresh Ebola outbreak is still a possibility. Health volunteers are doing their best to bring the cases under control, and epidemiological and surveillance efforts like the ones practiced by ECDC’s Ebola response team in Guinea are the best way to control the outbreak.
