Walgreens released its most recent flu index for the week that began on Dec. 29.

The U.S. metropolitan area with the most flu activity was Chattanooga, Tennessee. Second place was shared by Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Paduca, Kentucky; and Harrisburg, Illinois. The Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas came in third.

The remaining seven, ranked in order: Knoxville, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee; the Tri-Cities (Tennessee-Virginia border region); Columbia, South Carolina; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Rockford, Illinois; and Austin, Texas.

The top three states for flu activity are Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The report is an important source of information for various health departments and media industries on local, national and international levels.

The weekly Walgreens Flu Index report was created to give information about influenza activity to specific states and markets, and shows the highest number of cases across the country.

Researchers find the Walgreens Flu Index for the week by tallying the retail prescription data for the pharmacy’s antiviral medications. Walgreens locations across the U.S. use the antiviral medication to treat the flu.

The report is so accurate that it can show the flu incident rates in a specific ZIP code.

Its hyper-local data is designed to encourage public awareness about influenza and improve influenza prevention in communities.
