Another avian influenza case confirmed in Fujian, China

Department of Health (DH) officials in Hong Kong are closely monitoring a patient diagnosed with avian influenza A(H7N9) in Fujian, China, on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old patient is in isolation at a hospital and is listed in serious condition. 

"Locally, we will remain vigilant and work closely with the World Health Organization and relevant health authorities to monitor the latest developments," a DH spokesman said. "All boundary control points have implemented disease prevention and control measures. Thermal imaging systems are in place for body temperature checks of inbound travelers. Suspected cases will be immediately referred to public hospitals for follow-up investigation.”

Health authorities have broadcasted messages and placed posters in areas of frequent travel to increase awareness of the disease. The travel industry and the medical system have been in frequent communication about the illness in an effort to further protect travelers.

Officials continue to recommend personal and environmental hygiene as the best ways to avoid contracting avian influenza. It is also importatnt to avoid contact with birds and bird droppings.

People who have recently traveled to areas with avian influenza cases and who have fevers or respiratory symptoms should wear masks and report to medical professionals for evaluation.
