Rhode Island governor promotes flu vaccine

Rhode Island governor promotes flu vaccine

Governor-elect Gina Raimondo received her flu vaccine on Friday and reminded Rhode Island citizens to receive their vaccines before flu season hits.

"Our whole family gets vaccinated every year because we know that it's our best defense against the flu," Raimondo said. "I urge anyone who hasn't been vaccinated to consider getting a flu shot today."

Raimondo’s husband and two children also received their flu shots on Friday. Dr. Michael Fine, director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, vaccinated Raimondo and her family,

Health professionals remind the public that any person older than 6 months should receive flu vaccines each year.

"When you get a flu shot, you are not just protecting yourself.”  Fine said. “You are also helping to keep all of the people in your life healthy by preventing the spread of the flu.”

Every year, even healthy individuals contract the flu. Last year alone, 639 citizens of Rhode Island were hospitalized for the flu, and there were 32 deaths in the state related to the flu.

Senior citizens, pregnant women, health care workers, children, and patients with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease and cancer are the most susceptible for the flu.

It is especially important to receive vaccines with the upcoming holiday season.

“With the holiday season just around the corner, many of us will soon be getting together with family and friends,” Dr. Fine said. “Now is the time to get vaccinated to protect the people that you love."

Health professionals remind the public that pharmacies, public clinics and school clinics are readily accessible for flu vaccinations, and that there are clinics in Rhode Island that provide flu shots for individuals without health insurance.
